Retirees Corner March 2011
Retirees’ Corner
Bill Bowers, Chairman
GM Retiree ID Card: Recently you received notice on your pension check about registering to receive a “GM Retiree” ID card. This card will entitle you to “Marketplace” section offers. GM Marketplace is the one-stop retiree discount service that offers a variety of goods and services at a discounted rate. There are currently 58 vendors offering discounts. To view all of the offers go to www.gmretiree.com and click on Marketplace.
Parking at our monthly meeting: In March we had over 500 people at our meeting. This caused parking problems which we already had. We cannot park at the bank above Antone’s. There are other businesses that use that parking. We must respect those businesses. DO NOT USE THOSE SPACES!! For those attending their first meeting, we have additional parking at Phantom Fireworks about ½ mile south on Market St. A bus will bring you to the door and return you to your parked car.
National Negotiations: The retirees submitted contract resolutions for the collective bargaining coming this summer. The local union membership voted to adopt the following resolutions that will benefit us retirees.
- Reinstate the December pension bonus and increase it to $800
- Reinstate the “age creep” section of our pension agreement. This allows us to collect our supplement pension benefit once we qualify for social security until we reach our 80% social security age
- Increase base pension amount to benefit all retirees as our health care costs continue to increase
- Have GM pay for our dental and vision coverage again
These will be debated by the International Union and passed on to the top bargaining committee for negotiations.
Next meeting: Jim Mattas from Social Security Administration will be our speaker at the April 4, 2011, meeting. You probably will receive you See Here after our April meeting so I will start projecting our speakers and monthly meeting date one (1) month ahead.
Our May meeting will be held May 2, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Antone’s Banquet Center on Market St in Boardman. We do not have any speakers scheduled for May.
