Collective Bargaining Convention
We recently returned from the Collective Bargaining Convention in Detroit where resolutions were read, debated and voted on by the delegates.
Health Care Resolutions
The UAW is committed to a universal single payer plan to provide quality health care to all Americans, rich, poor, working and retired.
Resist employer attacks on retiree care.
Provide a full array of preventive care.
Challenge employers on their willingness to pursue comprehensive health care reform. Resist Health Savings Accounts which fragments the risk pool and shifts the cost to those who are a high risk.
Push employers to become prudent purchasers of pharmacy benefits. Close gaps in existing coverage, including physicaI therapy, prescribed services, total vision care, medical supplies and equipment.
Pension Resolutions
Improve normal and early retirement programs through increasing basic benefits, supplements and temporary benefits for both current and future retirees. Resist the efforts of employers to abandon Defined Benefit Plans for Defined Contribution Plans. Improve funding status of our plans".
Further address the Social Security" Age Creep" problem caused by the increased age to receive unreduced social security benefits.
Eliminate provisions allowing for reversion of pension fund assets to employers when a plan terminates.
Provide special reimbursed payments at age 65 for the full amount of Medicare "B" and part "D" premiums.
Improve credited service for layoff and sick leaves.
Eliminate the reduction in pensions for retirees electing survivor benefits and the reduction in the amount paid to their survivor.
Other Retiree Issues
Availability and adequate staffing of benefit reps to address retiree concerns at the employer's expense.
Employer provided free help-line or service centers to assist on health care, pension, social security, Medicare and Medicaid problems.
These are proposals for our top negotiators to achieve with GM. As resolutions are achieved I will report them to you.
