UAW REGION 2B WORKER TO WORKER PROGRAM
Lloyd Mahaffey Director
President Bush unveiled his plan to privatize Social Security in his State of the Union address last Wednesday. Not surprisingly, he avoided talking about the benefit cuts and borrowing that will be required under his proposal, and instead focused on the more positive “selling points”.
The good news is that so far Congressional Democrats are largely united in their opposition to Bush’s privatization plan. Indeed, enough Senate Democrats have expressed opposition that they could mount a successful filibuster to stop Bush’s plan. In addition, key Republicans have already expressed opposition or misgivings about Bush’s plan.
Nevertheless, it appears that GOP Congressional leaders are determined to press ahead with legislation to overhaul Social Security. It looks like they will move first in the Senate, probably sometime this spring. President Bush has made it clear he intends to campaign across the country to try to drum up support for his proposal.
Thus, we cannot afford to sit back on this priority issue. Instead, we need to start now to bring maximum grass roots pressure to bear on Representatives and Senators to oppose Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security. Our central message is that Bush’s plan would result in huge benefit cuts for future retirees, and also require the federal government to borrow trillions of dollars!
UAW activists can use the following toll free number to call their Representative and Senators: 1-888-355-3588. Call Senators I Wine and Voinovich. Congresspersons Ney, Regular, Gilmore, Bohner, They are on record of supporting the President on this issue.
In addition, most Representatives and Senators will be back in their districts and states during the upcoming Presidents’ Day recess from February 19-27. This is an deal time for UAW activists to schedule meetings with them to discuss the Social Security issue, and to ask for their pledge to oppose Bush’s privatization plan.
It is especially important that we bring maximum grass roots pressure to bear on the key swing Representatives and Senators on the attached list.
Thanks in advance for all of your efforts on this priority issue.
