It was founded as an independent group in New London, Connecticut in 1939 for designers, draftsmen, and other personnel at the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut. Electric Boat is now a Division of General Dynamics, and the world's first nuclear powered submarine was designed by members of Local 571.
