Election Committee

Jim Devlin – Chairperson, Charlie Fridley, Skip Williams, Vickie Crum,  Melanie Emerine, Karen Eusanio, Donnie Clark, Sherria Benson, Missi Booth, Russell Pinkard, Brandi Rodgers

For the next couple of months’ Election Committee articles we will be addressing some of the questions that we receive about our elections.

One question will get every election is:

Q:  “How do you know that people haven’t voted more than once when you have four (4) polling areas?”

A:  After every election we do a check of the sign in sheets and the manpower list from each polling area. These sign in sheets and manpower list are identified with each polling area address so we know where they were used at.

With the plant being so large you have to have a number of polling areas to make it accessible for everyone to vote.  With the short breaks we try to make voting as convenient and quickly as possible.

If we do get a report that someone has said or has heard that someone voted more than once, we do an investigation of every sign in sheet and manpower list. We have yet to discover that anyone voted more than once.

It is not our intent to get any Brother or Sister in trouble but as an Election Committee our task is to make sure that all the elections are conducted fairly for every candidate and voter.  As a committee we are governed by guidelines set up by the International Union and the Department of Labor of the Federal Government.  Under the Federal laws this offense is fraud and is punishable by a $10,000.00 fine and possibly a jail sentence and the person would be liable to pay all expenses for a new election.

The UAW Constitution and the UAW Guideline booklet are available at the Union Hall. The Federal government guide lines and laws are available at the web site: www.dol.gov

Marking of Ballots:

Q:  What happens to improperly marked ballots?

A:  When we get ballots that have been marked by any other way other than an “X”, a check mark “” or a dot “•” in the square box next to the candidate’s name we must void these ballots because they are identifiable. So DO NOT put any other markings on your ballot. There have been elections in the past that have been decided by one (1) or two (2) votes. So your vote does count.

If you as a candidate or voter have any questions contact one of your Election Committee members and we will get you an answer as quickly as possible.

Have a great month and spring is around the corner.
